Case Study:

Whirl-Pak®, in partnership with PTIS, conducted case study to compare the environmental impacts of our 120 mL and 500 mL bags against rigid bottle alternatives. The study utilized the EcoImpact COMMPASS software, which is widely used in the packaging industry for life cycle assessments. The output compared fossil fuel used, greenhouse gas emissions, and water use.

Generally, lighter materials have corresponding lower environment impact when compared to similar material. As such, the results concluded that rigid bottles use anywhere from 5-10 times as much material by weight as the equivalent size Whirl-Pak® pouch. They also concluded that Whirl-Pak® bags have much lower fossil fuel use, greenhouse gas impacts, and water usage.

  • Greenhouse gas impacts for rigid bottles evaluated were anywhere from 600%-1400% greater than the equivalent Whirl-Pak® bag.
  • Whirl-Pak® bags uses significantly less fossil fuel than other options as others are about 10x higher in weight. Film extrusion process also is much more efficient than blow molding.
  • Whirl-Pak® uses much less water than other process – driven largely by the manufacturing/conversation process where water is often needed to cool molds. Rigid bottles used 193%-536% more water.

Whirl-Pak® bags are more efficient in the environmental metrics evaluated across material usage, manufacturing, transportation, and end of life.
