SODIUM HYDROXIDE, FCC or caustic soda, is inorganic, highly basic compound that is water soluble, as well as soluble in ethanol and methanol. One of its many characteristics is that it's a deliquescent alkali and absorbs carbon dioxide and moisture from the air. Food grade sodium hydroxide is used in the chemical washing and peeling of fruits and vegetables, softening of firm substances and as a thickening agent.
