The trebuchet is one of the most elegant of all medieval weapons ever invented. With a simple counterweight, beam arm, and sling, heavier projectiles can be launched much further than is possible with much more complicated siege engines. The key to this success is the efficiency with which the gravitational potential energy of the counterweight can be converted to kinetic energy of the projectile.
